Sailor Wars

(As of 7 October 2006)

What thousands of years has it been? A dozen? A score? Even youma tire of the Dark Kingdom's oppression; how much more the human and the renegade! I will advise the Prince to formally thank the Sailor Scouts for their tireless endeavors in the Renegade Movement. These legendary Sailor Senshi just may lead us all to the end of an era, and usher in a new millennium.

-- Captain Ferrite's personal log, Royal Edo Ship Nemesis

What are the stories?

Prologue, "Operation: Fool's Gold"

Episode 1, "A New Millennium"

Episode 2, "The Dark Kingdom Strikes Back"

Episode 3, "Shadows of the Abyss"

Episode 4, "Return of the Senshi"

Epilogue, "The Earth-Realm Called Not-Child"

What's different from the other Sailor Wars?

This is neither the Sailor Wars of Sailor Scouts at war with each other, nor the silly one with Jadeite as the whiny main character. (I do recommend the second one, though, for those into camp!) And yes, I got the idea for this several years ago, when I could not find any (good) Sailor Moon/Star Wars story. What if things had happened differently at the end of the Moon Kingdom, making Sailor Moon much like Star Wars?

Queen Beryl, with Metallia at her back and her Generals ahead, conquered (not destroyed) the Silver Imperium. Technology grew further, the conquerors became monstrous, lowly humans were denied direct magic, the single language imposed upon all evolved, and the Dark Kingdom prepared for further conquest. Only Nemesis and a small principality on Earth, Edo, remained independent.

Youma, the victorious monsters, began sporting anomalies what were, at heart, good. These renegades eventually contacted each other, as well as the hidden magic-using humans, and grew to form the Renegade Movement. Even Prince Mamoru of Edo has begun, in secret, to support them. When Sailor Scouts began showing up and attaching themselves to the Movement, there could no longer be any turning back.

What does Sailor Moon Expanded have to do with it?

As I began assigning roles to the original Sailor Moon characters and constructing a timeline, strange things began to happen. Some characters have to divide roles, certainly, but some roles just stay open, massive holes in the story. For instance, I simply refuse to cast Molly, Melvin, Andrew, Haruna, or a General as the troublesome bounty hunter!

However, a couple of Dark Kingdom Renegades easily fill Boba Fett's armor, trading off partway through. Soon, other "Expanded" citizens join the fray, completing the cast and adding more richness beside. The technologies and magic give it a distinctive look (after evolving a bit), and also allow droids from Nemesis. "Expanded" history provides an excellent departure point, cementing the foundation quite well. Even the youma language adds flavor, for instance rationalizing "Edo" and a "beholding academy".

Although SME answers many questions, it poses others. Borrowing one author's characters may only require direct contact; DKR (6 chars), Chrysolite, Ferrite, Michael Maxwell, and possibly Puck, Star Hunter (Toma), and Alan Windwalker all factor in, though. A story plan must be submitted to the Sailor Moon Expanded committee.

To plausibly propose an alternate storyline, someone from the main SME universe must interact with it most of the story. Young Titanite's time is full, adult Ti is needed elsewhere, and other established characters are simply unsuited; besides, Sailor Wars characters take care of the main story pretty well. Therefore, I must propose a new SME character, a new Sailor Wars character to accompany her, and a side story to keep them working.

When can we see it?

Before it could be legally posted, it must be accepted as an SME story. Though I have other projects, demand may guide me to write during the consideration process! While all my copies have been lost, I did have the prologue and part of episode 1 written, notes on much of it, and pretty much all the events worked out. The rest is an exercise in narration.

All in all, the prologue may take a couple days, and the first section of episode 1 perhaps a week (from the opening to the droids in the sandy wastes, which I had written before). Perhaps prior to permission, I may send it to my critics/proofreaders for suggestions. (Wink, wink, nudge, nudge!) "They're, uh, giving me suggestions for improvement, yeah! And, uh, now I have to go call my wife, uh, Amy? That's right, yeah, uh, Amy Anderson, that's the ticket!"
