Some terms I use to describe these ideas:
Series - here, this may refer to a series of cartoons, anime (Japanese cartoons), another TV show, movie(s), or stories (including fanfics)
Fanfics - short for fan-written fictions, these are stories based on an original TV, movie, or book series, or even other fanfics!
Crossover - a story in which characters from two series meet and are involved in the plot. Shown by +, read "meets" or "plus". "Ms. Swan meets Superman" (MAD TV + DC Comics)
Fusion - a story in which the setting, storyline, and/or roles are from one (or more) series, but the original characters (or many of them) are replaced by those from another. Shown by ×, read ‘crossed with’. Green Eggs and Hamlet (Dr. Seuss × Shakespeare)
From - taken out of its original context, as in "Batman from DC Comics," or produced by, as in " 'Nativity in Black' from Black Sabbath". Represented by <. Batman (<DC Comics), NIB <Sabbath.
